About SWVBC
Overview
The Southwest Virginia Bird Club is devoted
to the well-being of pet birds under human care. In short - we're
a bunch of bird geeks who like to learn more about the needs of
our babies and help others learn about the delights of pet birds,
dealing with issues on bird care, bird breeding, and conservation
issues.
Activities
The club holds regular
meetings generally including a 'bird of the month,' an avian
related guest speaker or program, a raffle, refreshments, and time
for informal discussion and social gathering. Also, once a year
we hold a Bird Fair in Roanoke Virginia,
which is devoted to providing bird owners in south west Virginia
access to both commercial aviculturists and educational information.
Since SWVBC is a not-for-profit organization, all profit from the
fair (beyond the club's own operating expenses) is devoted to avian-related
charities.
The Bird of the Month
Most
months, a club member brings a bird to meet the other members
and 'strut her stuff.' The Bird of the Month is arranged in advance
so as to avoid having two birds arriving at the same meeting --
a potential for the spread of avian disease. We are currently
working on writeups for a number of our recent birdy guests for
presentation on this site.
